Genetic Diet - Matching food with genes

MIT Technology Review: Aug. 2005 pp54-58

- Paradigm shift in public understanding of food:
Means of survival => taste and wholesome food => fear for food borne microbes.

- The same concept of using genetic knowledge to produce drugs (Pharmacogenomics), can be used on food and nutrients (Nutritional genomics)

- However, to produce promising results, nutritional geneticists will need far cheaper and faster genertic-screening tools.

- In the mean time, balance diet and food supplement are key to healthly life.

- Pascal' Wager: if erroneously disbelieving God consigns you to hell, but erroneously believing in God has no consequences, it is only rational to believe in God.

List of papers on research results on CordyMax

1) A fermentation product of Cordyceps sinensis increases whole-body insulin sensitivity in rats.
Balon TW, Jasman AP, Zhu JS.

Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gonda Research Center, Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope Medical Center, Duarte, CA, USA. tomwbalon@hotmail.com

J Altern Complement Med. 2002 Aug;8(4):403-5.

Conclusion:
We conclude that CordyMax Cs-4 may have potential beneficial effects by maintaining whole-body glucose disposal with a less pronounced increase in insulin secretion after a carbohydrate challenge, however, its effects on endurance performance remain questionable.

2) Cordyceps Sinensis (CordyMax Cs-4) supplementation does not improve endurance exercise performance.

Parcell AC, Smith JM, Schulthies SS, Myrer JW, Fellingham G.
Human Performance Research Center at Brigham Young Uninversity, Provo, UT 84602, USA.

Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 2004 Apr;14(2):236-42.

Conclusion:
It is concluded that 5 weeks of CordyMax Cs-4 supplementation has no effect on aerobic capacity or endurance exercise performance in endurance-trained male cyclists.

3) CordyMax Cs-4 improves glucose metabolism and increases insulin sensitivity in normal rats.
Zhao CS, Yin WT, Wang JY, Zhang Y, Yu H, Cooper R, Smidt C, Zhu JS.

Pharmanex Beijing Clinical-Pharmacology Research Center, China.

J Altern Complement Med. 2002 Aug;8(4):403-5.

Conclusion:
CordyMax Cs-4 is effective in lowering basal blood glucose and plasma insulin, improving glucose metabolism by enhancing insulin sensitivity, and improving oral glucose tolerance.

4) CordyMax Cs-4 improves steady-state bioenergy status in mouse liver.
Dai G, Bao T, Xu C, Cooper R, Zhu JS.

Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Materia Medica, Peking Union Medical University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

J Altern Complement Med. 2001 Jun;7(3):231-40.

Result:
Steady-state beta adenosine triphosphate (ATP) increased in the liver of mice that received CordyMax (200 or 400 mg/kg per day) for 7 days, by 12.3% +/- 0.8% and 18.4% +/- 0.9%, respectively, compared to placebo controls.

Conclusion:
CordyMax is effective in improving bioenergy status in the murine liver, suggesting a mechanism underlying the known clinical effectiveness of CordyMax in alleviating fatigue and improving physical endurance, especially in elderly subjects.
